STOPCO2 Manifesto — Alexander Seghers
STOPCO2 MANIFESTO STARTED IN 1999
ONE PLANET. ONE ATMOSPHERE. ONE RESPONSIBILITY.
STOP HEATING UP THE PLANET.
We have only one home.
One atmosphere.
One ocean system.
One planet.
We can argue about terminology, politics, economics and priorities.
But one thing should be beyond argument:
We have a responsibility to leave a livable world to the generations that come after us.
That responsibility belongs to all of us.
Not only governments.
Not only scientists.
Not only environmental organisations.
Not only companies.
To all of us.
RES NON VERBA
Things, not words.
This Latin expression has been part of my personal philosophy for many years.
It is also the heart of STOPCO2.
We have become exceptionally good at talking.
We produce conferences, reports, strategies, promises, slogans and declarations.
But talking about change is not the same as changing.
RES NON VERBA.
Think.
Question.
Decide.
Act.
WHY STOPCO2?
My name is Alexander M. W. Seghers.
I am a Belgian entrepreneur, manager, project organiser and ocean sailor living in the Strait of Gibraltar.
I have spent decades working, sailing, building, restoring, organising and solving practical problems.
I have crossed the Atlantic six times and sailed more than 80,000 nautical miles.
The ocean has taught me something simple:
Nature does not negotiate.
Wind is wind.
Storms are storms.
The sea does not care about political borders.
And the atmosphere does not recognise nationality.
We all share the same planet.
THIS IS NOT ABOUT PERFECTION
STOPCO2 is not about pretending that human beings can suddenly become perfect.
We cannot.
We live in houses.
We travel.
We manufacture things.
We eat.
We build.
We trade.
We consume energy.
We make mistakes.
The question is not whether humanity can become perfect.
The question is whether we can become better.
And whether we can become better fast enough.
FROM DENIAL TO RESPONSIBILITY
Climate discussions have often become trapped in arguments.
Who is responsible?
Who is right?
Who is wrong?
Which country should act first?
Which company is responsible?
Which consumer should change?
Meanwhile, forests are under pressure, oceans are polluted, ecosystems are being transformed and societies face increasingly complex environmental and economic challenges.
Arguments have their place.
Science matters.
Evidence matters.
Debate matters.
But eventually there comes a moment when discussion has to become action.
We need fewer excuses and more solutions.
THE OCEAN
The ocean is not a distant blue background on a postcard.
It is a living system on which human civilisation depends.
It connects continents.
It supports enormous biodiversity.
It influences weather and climate.
It provides food and livelihoods.
And it has absorbed enormous amounts of human pollution.
As a sailor, I have always felt a particular responsibility towards the sea.
Respect the ocean.
Protect marine ecosystems.
Reduce pollution.
Reduce unnecessary waste.
Support responsible fisheries.
Research the oceans.
Develop cleaner maritime transport.
And explore the enormous potential of sailing technology and renewable energy.
THE FORESTS
We also need forests.
Forests provide habitats, biodiversity, resources and ecosystem services essential to human societies.
They store carbon and interact with the atmosphere, water cycle and climate.
Protecting existing forests should matter.
Restoring degraded landscapes should matter.
Planting appropriate trees in appropriate places should matter.
But reforestation is not a magic excuse to continue emitting without limits.
Protect what already exists.
Restore what has been damaged.
Reduce the causes of the damage.
We need all three.
THE CO₂ QUESTION
CO₂ is part of the natural carbon cycle.
It is also a fundamental molecule of life.
Plants use carbon dioxide in photosynthesis.
Humans use CO₂ in industry and everyday products.
Carbonated drinks , beer contain CO₂.
The issue is therefore not simply:
“CO₂ = bad.”
The important questions are more complicated.
How much CO₂ are we releasing?
From where?
How quickly?
How much is being removed or absorbed?
What happens to the balance of the carbon cycle?
And what other environmental pressures are we creating at the same time?
Understanding comes before responsible action.
STOPCO2 wants to encourage people to ask better questions and to look for evidence-based answers.
1000 ALTERNATIVES
I do not believe there is one magic solution.
There are thousands.
Perhaps millions.
Renewable energy.
Energy efficiency.
Better buildings.
Public transport.
Rail.
Cycling.
Electric mobility.
Sustainable agriculture.
Local food.
Reforestation.
Forest protection.
Ocean research.
Plastic reduction.
Circular economy.
Repair.
Reuse.
Recycling.
Responsible consumption.
Cleaner industry.
Better urban planning.
Renewable maritime transport.
Sailing cargo vessels.
Education.
Science.
Technology.
Entrepreneurship.
Local communities.
And many ideas that have not yet been invented.
1000 alternatives are better than one excuse.
THE CONSUMER HAS POWER
Every purchase is a small economic decision.
Every company responds to demand.
Every investor decides where capital goes.
Every entrepreneur decides what to build.
Every government decides which framework to create.
Every citizen can influence the culture around them.
This does not mean that individuals carry the entire responsibility.
They do not.
Governments, institutions and major industries have enormous influence.
But individual choices still matter.
Consumer choice is one part of the system.
Choose better when you can.
Waste less.
Repair.
Reuse.
Buy locally when practical.
Ask questions.
Support responsible businesses.
And demand transparency.
BUSINESS CAN BE PART OF THE SOLUTION
I am an entrepreneur.
I therefore do not see business and environmental responsibility as opposites.
Business creates technology.
Business creates employment.
Business moves capital.
Business develops products.
Business can scale ideas.
The challenge is to make responsible solutions economically viable and attractive.
Climate action needs entrepreneurs.
It needs engineers.
Scientists.
Sailors.
Farmers.
Designers.
Teachers.
Investors.
Builders.
Communicators.
Workers.
And millions of ordinary people willing to participate.
RESPONSIBLE ADVERTISING
Advertising is extraordinarily powerful.
It can make people want things they never knew they wanted.
It can also make people aware of better choices.
That is where the original STOPCO2 idea began.
What if advertising itself could become part of climate action?
What if responsible companies could visibly communicate what they are doing?
What if consumers could recognise climate-action initiatives more easily?
What if a simple, memorable symbol could connect brands, campaigns, information and practical solutions?
This is the idea behind:
STOPCO2 CLIMATE ACTION ADVERTISING
A potential international communication network connecting responsible brands, media, organisations, entrepreneurs and consumers.
THE STOPCO2 SYMBOL
A simple message.
A recognisable identity.
A gateway to information.
A conversation.
An invitation to act.
STOPCO2
Not a claim of perfection.
Not a substitute for scientific certification.
Not a licence for greenwashing.
Instead:
A visible invitation to take responsibility.
EDUCATION
Education is one of the most powerful forms of climate action.
Children should learn about science.
Nature.
Oceans.
Forests.
Food.
Energy.
Economics.
Critical thinking.
Personal responsibility.
And cooperation.
But education should also develop qualities that are often overlooked:
Empathy.
Discipline.
Resilience.
Respect.
Courage.
Self-confidence.
Responsibility.
This is one reason I have such a long-standing interest in traditional martial arts, yoga, breathing, meditation and outdoor activities.
A healthy society needs healthy minds, healthy bodies and a sense of responsibility towards others.
HUMAN VALUES
Technology alone will not solve everything.
Neither will money.
Neither will politics.
A sustainable future also requires human values.
Respect.
Honesty.
Cooperation.
Humility.
Curiosity.
Responsibility.
And the willingness to admit:
“I don't know. Let's learn.”
That is not weakness.
It is intelligence.
MEN, WOMEN AND FAMILIES
Strong societies need strong families and strong communities.
Women and men should have the freedom and opportunity to develop their talents, ambitions and leadership.
Girls should grow up confident.
Boys should learn responsibility.
Children should learn respect.
Men should learn that strength does not require aggression.
Women should never have to accept violence or intimidation.
Self-defence education can give people confidence, awareness and resilience.
Real strength is found in self-control.
And real leadership begins with responsibility.
LOCAL ACTION
The future does not have to be built only in huge cities or corporate headquarters.
It can start in a street.
A village.
A school.
A farm.
A workshop.
A harbour.
A neighbourhood.
Imagine communities with:
local food production;
urban gardens;
renewable energy;
repair workshops;
shared resources;
composting;
responsible waste management;
local businesses;
community transport;
education;
sport;
arts;
nature;
and people who know one another.
Think globally. Build locally.
ZERO-EMISSION SAILING
One of the ideas closest to my heart is the revival and development of sustainable commercial sailing.
For centuries, sailing ships transported people and cargo across oceans.
Today we have enormous technological capabilities.
Could modern engineering, renewable energy, digital navigation and traditional sailing knowledge work together?
Could commercial sailing once again become part of the maritime transport mix?
I believe it is worth investigating.
The wind is free.
The challenge is to build the right ships, infrastructure, business models and logistics.
That is an opportunity for engineers, shipbuilders, investors, sailors and entrepreneurs.
CRISES ARE ALSO OPPORTUNITIES
Every major transformation creates disruption.
But it also creates opportunities.
New technologies.
New companies.
New professions.
New forms of transport.
New materials.
New agricultural systems.
New energy systems.
New financial models.
New ways of communicating.
The transition can create value.
The question is what kind of value we choose to create.
NO ONE CAN DO EVERYTHING
I cannot solve climate change.
Neither can you.
Neither can one company.
Neither can one government.
But everyone can do something.
A sailor can sail.
An engineer can invent.
A farmer can regenerate soil.
A teacher can educate.
A company can innovate.
An investor can direct capital.
A designer can communicate.
A parent can educate a child.
A consumer can ask a question.
A community can organise.
Millions of small actions can become a large movement.
THE FUTURE IS NOT WRITTEN
I do not believe that humanity is destined to fail.
Nor do I believe that optimism means ignoring reality.
Real optimism requires action.
We have extraordinary scientific knowledge.
We have extraordinary technology.
We have global communication.
We have renewable energy technologies.
We have talented people.
We have entrepreneurs.
We have young generations demanding answers.
What we need is the courage to connect these resources and act.
STOPCO2
This is why STOPCO2 exists.
Not to tell people that I have all the answers.
I don't.
Not to create another endless argument.
There are already enough.
Not to pretend that one logo will save the planet.
It won't.
STOPCO2 exists to ask a simple question:
WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?
And then another:
WHO WANTS TO DO SOMETHING TOGETHER?
THINK.
Question what you are told.
Learn.
Look for evidence.
Understand the system.
Think beyond headlines.
QUESTION.
Question waste.
Question pollution.
Question inefficient systems.
Question business models.
Question your own habits.
Question what can be improved.
ACT.
Plant something.
Protect something.
Build something.
Repair something.
Teach someone.
Learn something.
Invest responsibly.
Create employment.
Support innovation.
Reduce waste.
Protect the ocean.
Protect forests.
Help your community.
Do something useful.
RES NON VERBA
Things, not words.
That is the challenge.
That is the invitation.
That is the philosophy.
ONE PLANET.
ONE ATMOSPHERE.
ONE RESPONSIBILITY.
THINK. QUESTION. ACT.
STOPCO2
STOP HEATING UP THE PLANET.

ONE PLANET. ONE ATMOSPHERE. ONE RESPONSIBILITY.
STOP HEATING UP THE PLANET.
We have only one home.
Our oceans.
Our forests.
Our soil.
Our water.
Our atmosphere.
They are not infinite.
STOPCO2 is a climate-action communication initiative founded by Alexander M. W. Seghers in 1999.
Its purpose is simple:
Turn climate awareness into action.
Not tomorrow.
Now.
THINK. QUESTION. ACT.
For decades, we have talked about climate change.
We have produced reports, conferences, promises, campaigns and endless discussions.
But the world does not change because we talk about changing it.
It changes when people act.
STOPCO2 wants to make climate action visible, understandable and impossible to ignore.
Through communication.
Through responsible consumption.
Through practical ideas.
Through entrepreneurs, companies, cities, communities and individuals willing to do something.
THE CO₂ PARADOX
CO₂ IS EVERYWHERE.
It is in the air.
It is part of the carbon cycle.
It is used in industry.
It is inside carbonated drinks.
But the question is not simply:
“Is CO₂ good or bad?”
The real questions are:
Where does it come from?
How much are we releasing?
Where does it go?
How long does it remain in the atmosphere?
And what can we realistically do about it?
That is where the STOPCO2 conversation begins.
FROM WORDS TO ACTION
STOPCO2 is interested in solutions rather than endless arguments.
Ideas include:
Renewable energy
Reforestation and forest protection
Ocean protection and research
Sustainable agriculture
Reduction of plastic pollution
Circular economy
Responsible consumption
Zero-emission transport
Sustainable shipping
Sailing cargo vessels
Local production and resilient communities
Education and climate communication
Responsible advertising
New technologies and practical innovation
1000 IDEAS ARE BETTER THAN ONE EXCUSE.
THE STOPCO2 CLIMATE ACTION NETWORK
Imagine seeing one clear symbol everywhere:
STOPCO2
On packaging.
In advertising.
In media.
On websites.
At events.
In cities.
In schools.
On sustainable products.
Connected to practical information and real solutions.
A simple sign.
A global conversation.
A network for climate action.
The idea is to develop STOPCO2 as an international climate-action communication and advertising platform, connecting responsible brands, companies, organisations, media, cities and consumers.
CLIMATE ACTION BRANDS
A company does not have to be perfect to start doing something better.
A brand can communicate:
What it is changing.
What it is investing in.
What consumers can do.
Where progress is being made.
STOPCO2 aims to create a communication environment where responsible action becomes visible.
Think of it as climate-action advertising.
Not advertising more consumption for the sake of consumption.
Advertising better choices.
THE CO₂ QUESTION
Could something as simple as a familiar product create a global conversation?
The purpose is to make people stop, think and ask questions.
Maybe the question is the message.
OCEANS. FORESTS. FOOD. LIFE.
As an ocean sailor, I have spent decades experiencing the sea.
The ocean is not an abstract concept to me.
It is home.
Forests are not just statistics.
They are living systems.
Food is not simply a commodity.
It is the basis of human survival.
Climate action is therefore not only about CO₂.
It is about the conditions that allow life to flourish.
RES NON VERBA
WORDS WITHOUT ACTION ARE NOT ENOUGH
RES NON VERBA
ACTION, not words.
It is also the philosophy behind STOPCO2.
Think carefully.
Speak honestly.
Then do something.
